The EveryLibrary Institute is proud to host a webinar conversation with Tim Coates, lead investigator for the Freckle Project, on the launch of the 2021 Freckle Report. Freckle has recently wrapped up the 2021 edition of its "Where Did You Get that Book" survey of the American public where it asked about reading habits, pathways to the acquisition of reading materials, and format preferences. The 2021 survey is particularly notable because it took place in April, approximately one year since the COVID-related shutdowns of American society - and especially our public libraries.
In this Webinar you will see the comparison between two consumer surveys about reading in America: the 2019 one was conducted a year before the pandemic, and a second which was conducted earlier this year during the pandemic. These surveys explore the role that libraries play and the services they offer. They point to how people find what they want to read and how that changed and increased during the pandemic.
Specifically, the survey results show the change in reading habits - who was reading, how much that changed, and in what format they sought books (print, eBooks and Audio). They categorize where people obtained the books they read - from bookstores, the internet, from libraries, and other places. They also identify the impact the pandemic has had on those services, and why and how Americans used those sources.
The presentation will conclude with some observations and suggestions about how these findings will affect libraries and their suppliers and where they might focus in the coming months.
