Are you looking for an internship that makes a significant difference for libraries around the world and where you'll learn to use cutting edge political advocacy tactics and strategies to help keep library doors open and help libraries secure funding? Do you also want to learn more about library funding issues and build the advocacy skills that just aren't typically taught in most MLIS programs? If so, then this internship is for you.
EveryLibrary Institute supports library specific campaigns and elections as well as local, federal, and state issues around libraries and information access. You should be interested in and have a passion for literacy, reading, information access, first amendment rights, and libraries. You should also be passionate about learning how to create political movements online and offline.
If you're interested in an internship with EveryLibrary, please read the internship descriptions below and select the internship opportunities that you are most interested in. While we offer both paid and unpaid internships, paid internship positions are not always available, but unpaid internships are. We typically post our paid internship openings on Barefoot Student when they become available. However, those who have signed up here will be notified of open paid positions first and they will be given a priority interview in the internship hiring process.
This is an entry-level internship and we don’t expect you to have experience in politics or librarianship! We’ll teach you everything you need to be successful and you’ll be able to have room for creativity and to explore areas that interest you. This is an internship and we want you to enjoy it and put your passions to work to support libraries across the United States.
General Qualifications
- Interns must be passionate about politics and libraries or information access and first amendment rights.
- Must have working knowledge of entry-level programs such as the Microsoft suite of apps and some social media knowledge and understanding.
- Must be comfortable around both PCs and Macs
- Strong time management skills a must, along with the ability to keep up with changing task prioritization in a fast-paced team environment.
- Willingness to work as part of a team and take creative direction from superiors and constructive criticism from other team members.
- Excellent attention to detail and superior communication skills.
- Willingness to communicate and work with other volunteers and staff on large projects.
- Self-motivated and excited to make a difference!
- Bi-lingual individuals are highly encouraged to apply!
While interns are responsible for various programs and services in the organization, they will work closely with full time staff to accomplish these goals. Interns may take leadership roles upon completion of training and there are opportunities for full-time employment growing from part-time internships upon graduation of college.
These internships are our current listings, there are opportunities to work beyond these roles. Of course, all interns are expected to be fully committed to communicating with other teams and groups and engage with other interns to complete projects.
Data Internship
Our Data Interns are responsible for data cultivation, management, and maintenance. This intern will ensure that our database of library supports is kept up to date, clean, and accurate. There are opportunities for a wide range of research topics in this internship. You will be given access to a number of big data sources and voter information in order to build data around library supporters and to identify and understand trends in voter support of libraries.
Donor Research and Cultivation Internship
Our Donor Interns work with a team of individuals to use data sources to research potential donors to library causes and issues. We are looking for someone who is interested in taking an innovative approach to identifying donors across the country. These may be donors to specific actions for library causes such as supporting state wide or local legislation, local campaigns and elections, or project specific to help EveryLibrary meet the needs of national advocacy tools for libraries.
Design And Visual Media Internship
Our Design and Digital Media Interns are responsible for managing our growing network of social media support for libraries. You will be in charge of creating compelling images, videos, and social media posts as well as scheduling and maintaining our wide network of social media profiles. You may have the opportunity to create content that is specific to local campaigns or more general content for national advocacy. We will teach you the underlying political and community organizing theory and social engineering to help you find small donors and identify supporters of library causes.
Grant Writing Internship
Our Grant Writing Interns are primarily responsible for writing research grants for the EveryLibrary Institute. The Institute is a 501c3 organization that conducts research on library support in the United States. This organization also conducts training for librarians and library supporters as well as public education about library issues. The grant writing intern will research and write grants for these projects and others as needed.
Research Internship
Our research interns primarily conduct opposition, supporter, legislative, political, local and national research in order to help us navigate the changing landscapes of American Politics and its influence on libraries and librarianship. There are a wide range of research opportunities. Research interns work closely with the Grant Writing interns and data interns to conduct research and generate data and information that can be used by libraries across the country to build support in their communities.
Event Coordination Internship
Event Interns are responsible for creating events and fundraisers for both EveryLibrary as well as local, state, and federal initiatives. These events can be small or large fundraisers, rallies, or other events as needed. Event interns have the opportunity to explore a wide range of event types as well as the marketing and invitations to attendees and the planning and execution of all aspects of the event to make sure that it is successful.
Administrative Internship
Administrative Interns are responsible for scheduling and planning of administrative tasks. These include arranging travel, filling reimbursements, tracking receipts, issuing checks, and filing invoices. These interns work closely with the administration of EveryLibrary to support a wide range of needs.
Social Media and Digital Content Internship
The writing interns create articles, essays, blog posts, and other written content to support libraries and related issues in the United States. This is an opportunity to create high-impact content and get published on a wide variety of mediums. From in-print to online, this intern will create content that addresses opposition claims to library campaigns, create entertaining content for blog posts and journals, and draft fundraising emails or engaging petition content on legislative issues around librarianship.
Community Engagement and Volunteer Internship
The community and volunteer intern will work to create online and offline communities of individuals who are interested in volunteering to build support for libraries. There are opportunities to work with a number of advanced digital platforms to create online communities of library supporters for specific local, state, or federal issues as well as general support for libraries. This intern will be responsible for the training, scheduling, and cultivation of volunteers across the country.
We have offices located in Chicago, Brooklyn, and Annapolis.
