The following map layers were included to visualize the school librarian requirements across the United States already listed on the EveryLibrary website:

  • School Librarian Required by Law or Educational Regulations: State law or education code requiring a school libraria
  • Teaching License Required for School Librarians
  • NAEP Reading Grade 4 (2022): Reading grade 4 percent at or above basic and proficient achievement level, average score, and difference from the national public for each State.
  • NAEP Reading Grade 8 (2022): Reading grade 8 percent at or above basic and proficient achievement level, average score, and difference from the national public for each State.
  • NAEP Math Grade 4 (2022): Math grade 4 percent at or above basic and proficient achievement level, average score, and difference from the national public for each State.
  • NAEP Math Grade 8 (2022): Math grade 8 percent at or above basic and proficient achievement level, average score, and difference from the national public for each State.
  • Students per School Librarian FTE Ratios: number of students per full-time school librarian
  • ACS Educational Attainment Variables: percent of the population 25 years and over whose highest education is less than high school
  • ACS Internet Access by Age and Race Variables: percent of the population 18-64 years in households with no computers
  • ACS Median Household Incomes Variables: Median Household Income in the past 12 months (inflation-adjusted dollars to last year of 5-year range).

Data for this project was gathered from the U.S Census Bureau, The EveryLibrary Institute, the National Center for Education Statistics' National Assessment of Educational Progress, and The School Librarian Investigation (SLIDE) Study.
