The current wave of attacks on library boards is part of a troubling anti-library movement. In over a dozen states, we’ve identified bills designed to fundamentally weaken the operations of public libraries. These bills often rely on fabricated evidence to claim that library databases contain harmful materials. They seek to remove the authority of library boards, defund institutions, and prohibit discussions on race, gender, and sexuality. Many of these laws even criminalize librarians, exposing them to prosecution and fines under harmful-to-minors and obscenity laws. While individual book bans are concerning, this coordinated legislative assault threatens the very structure of libraries and the freedom of librarians to serve their communities.
Whether you are in a Parish in Louisiana, a small town in Kansas, or a big city in Texas, the Library Defense Fund will be an ally in these battles, providing essential resources and support to safeguard libraries, civil rights, and the First Amendment.
When libraries are diminished, communities lose more than just books—they lose opportunities, access to education, and spaces for free expression. In schools, a weakened library system means students miss out on stories that affirm their identities and inspire their futures. In our neighborhoods, a dismantled library system leads to a decline in cultural and intellectual resources. The Library Defense Fund is committed to ensuring that libraries continue to serve without fear or favor, defending the values that make them a cornerstone of American society.
