Where Did You Get that Book 2025 - Freckle Survey and Report April 2025

Join EveryLibrary Institute's John Chrastka and Freckle Project lead Tim Coates as they dive into the latest April 2025 survey findings, the 9th in this ongoing series, tracking shifts in reader behavior and library use across formats and time.

Since April 2019, the Freckle Project has been asking a key question of American readers: "Where did you get that book?" Through a series of semi-annual public-facing surveys, project lead Tim Coates has been tracking reading habits and format shifts before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings reveal how public libraries are deeply impacted by changes in reading habits, format preferences, and choices about where people acquire their books.

The EveryLibrary Institute is proud to support the release of the May 2025 Freckle Report, the ninth installment in the ongoing "Where Did You Get That Book?" survey series. This latest report provides an in-depth analysis of American reading behaviors, highlighting significant shifts in format preferences and book acquisition methods, particularly in the post-pandemic era.

The May 2025 report integrates findings from the April 2025 survey and includes the latest data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for 2023. Key highlights from the report reveal a continued rise in digital borrowing, a growing preference for nonfiction and backlist titles, and the critical role of public libraries in adapting to these trends.

About the Freckle Project

The Freckle Project is a longitudinal research initiative launched in April 2019 by Principal Investigator Tim Coates. Through semi-annual surveys, it poses a fundamental question to American readers: "Where did you get that book?" This inquiry aims to uncover patterns in reading habits, format preferences, and the evolving role of libraries in book acquisition.

Key findings from the project have highlighted a significant shift towards digital formats, with e-books and audiobooks gaining popularity. Despite this digital trend, print books remain a staple, especially among younger readers. Public libraries continue to play a crucial role, with a notable percentage of readers sourcing their materials from library collections.

The EveryLibrary Institute supports the Freckle Project by disseminating its findings to library professionals and stakeholders, aiding in strategic planning and service enhancement.
